APPRAISER: Well, these photographs are by# D.F.
Barry, who was of Native Americans.
He traveled a lot in# this region, living with Native Americans,## living with the Lakota, who actually# called him "The Little Shadow Catcher."
GUEST: (laughing): Wow.
and because of that was able to photograph very# well-known and very important leaders of these different groups and tribes.
In addition# to photographing Native American leaders,## he photographed United States military# leaders.
The entire 19th century, really,## there was a lot of conflict between# the Native people and the United States## military who were really trying to expand# the territory that they could control.
The## Native Americans who we see in these different# photographs were involved in leading their own## people and resisting the military, but also in# transitioning their people to reservation life.
GUEST: Okay.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: This figure## the most famous leaders and one of the people# who Barry's most associated with photo GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: Barry recorded stories from## these figures and Usher Burdick felt t in North Dakota.
He served in state politics, he# served in Congress, and he took the stories that## Barry recorded and made sure that they stayed a# part of the historical record.
The photographs## here were probably printed in the early 20th# century.
This photograph is actually signed.# At auction I would estimate this group# of photographs between $2,000 and $3,000.
GUEST: Wow.
