RUTH: Performing with my sisters was an adventure.

It was exciting because we knew each other so well.

We kind of like knew each other's moods and I probably attribute that to the fact that we grew up close.

My mother always wanted us to be close.

And we grew up listening to country music somewhat because my father being a minister and my mother restricted what they allowed us to listen to.

And country flavor was kind of okay, but rock and roll was definitely out the window.

And once we became adults and were able to do what we wanted to do, we were always fans of R&B, always.

We didn't want to be pigeonholed into one particular genre of music, you know?

So my sisters, even before I got in the group, were writing songs like "Jada" and "Shaky Flat Blues" and "Sugar," and they always had a country twang or a blues flavor to them.

Our vocal ranges were so comfortable where I was on the bottom, June was on the top, and Bonnie and Anita were in the middle.

That's the way it was.

We knew where we sounded best, and we just went with it.

And it was just a lot of fun.

I hope that people will be able to appreciate the work that we did and the fun that we had.

Just a lot of fun in a world that we thought we'd never be in, you know?

All the TV shows and variety shows, and you sort of wanted to hit all those variety shows, the Tonight Shows and Midnight Special and Wolfman Jack and all that stuff.

You just kind of wanted to hit all that stuff, you know?

We really, really hit most of them.

I don't know of another black female group that did what we did.

Looking back now, I'm amazed at the 50 plus years of our legacy.

Wow, you girls did a lot.

We had a break, and one of Richard's staff members, Jim Track, came in and said, "Hey, there's a box of tapes sitting here "if you guys want to listen to some of them "and maybe pick out some material maybe for the- for the album."

So we started listening to some things and we came across this cute little song.

And we were like, "Whoa, that's a cute little song.

Hmm."

So we called Jim Track back in there and said, "Hey, you know, we like "this little song and maybe we should do this little song."

And of course the first response about the song was, "Who's gonna do that low part, that automatic?"

And I said, "You all know I can do that part."

I went to see Michael Jackson's concert in Paris when he was touring and he and I were having a conversation.

He said, "You're the one with the deep voice, huh?

You're singing that song 'Automatic' huh?"

I'm like, "Yeah, yeah, that's me."

So he said that was one of his favorites.

June had sort of fell away from me and Anita.

I had just given birth to my third child, and we were kind of in limbo.

This was during the '70s, before we met Richard Perry.

So when we met Richard, and he became interested in having us launch his new label, Planet Records, he wanted a completely different type of thing, and we were okay with making that change and making that transition.

So "He's So Shy," "Fire," all those songs were a definite new direction for us, so to speak.

And I think the industry kind of felt like that was our message as well.

Because several radio stations decided they weren't going to play it because it was just a little too erotic.

That was our intention was, you know, guys being in such a hurry to just take over your life or throw you in the bed and that kind of, it's a- slow down, dude, just slow down.

And I didn't like the song.

It sounded like a bomb to me.

And I was not in the mood to be singing about no violence and no war and no neutron, nothing.

And Allie took me aside and she said, "Look, "just sing the song like you're in church, okay?

That's what I want to hear."

And I was like, okay, I can do that.

I can do that.

So that's how it came about and I did it.

And I love singing "Neutron" on stage.

It just takes me to another place.

The album was titled I'm So Excited and the song was not a single.

And we were so hurt that we were sort of caught in the middle of some bureaucracy with the record companies and the song got lost.

And we were really disappointed.

So when we started doing Break Out, Anita stepped up and said, "Look, we need to "re-release "I'm So Excited."

It needs to be on this album."

When we were writing the song, actually, me and my sisters together, me, Anita, and June wrote that song with Trevor Lawrence.

We said, "We want a song that everybody can relate to."

And so Trevor actually came up with this.

He said, "So you want to write about what?

"You're going out on the weekend at night, "and maybe you got a date with somebody, and how are you feeling?"

And that line just kept coming up, just kept coming up.

So excited, so excited.

And the more we talked about it, the more we were convinced that it was a universal line that everybody could relate to at some point in their life.

It worked.

You know, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't we're like "What are we doing laying on this rug (laughs) like what?"

We love the "Neutron Dance" video, we love the "Jump" video, it was all very new.

Everything has evolved, just the whole history and legacy of the Pointer Sisters.

And it's- it's amazing because it was just a constant transition that continued to be, thank God, family.

And when I walk out on stage and see the audience responding with such love and respect and admiration for who I am and who my sisters have been, it really tugs at my heart and it makes me appreciate, you know, what we have done.
