Kim works beside Gretchen pulling aboard oyster-filled cages. This year, they closed their growing season on a snowy late December morning before taking time in the winter to “exhale” before work begins again in the spring.

(gentle music) Yes, she's not allowed to go on the boat when we harvest.
So you don't get to go today.
(gentle music) - Oh, I know.
(dog barking) Here, there you go.
There's your bed, okay.

(gentle music) (Gretchen laughing) (oysters getting washed) - [Gretchen] This is where we wash their face and brush their teeth.
- [Kim] Since we stop at Christmas, it's like an opportunity to exhale.
- [Gretchen] The word exhale is perfect.
We've been do doing it for such a long time that now, when December comes, it's a fun thing to be able to produce for everybody for Christmas, 'cause it's a holiday, so it's joyous, but it's also joyous in its ability to, for the two of us to just come home and exhale and take our time.
(gentle music) You got tears coming outta your eyes, it's so cold.
- Yeah, I remember this.
I remember we used to do this every day.
- Remember when you would come home in the middle of the winter and you'd have icicles coming outta your nose?
- Yep.
That's why I don't do it in the winter anymore.
(both laughing) (gentle music) - Merry Christmas.
- [Kim] Ho ho ho.
- Ho ho, ho.
- Okay.
(Gretchen laughing) - All right, job well done.
- Good job.
- Kisses.
- Yeah.
(both kissing) (gentle music) Okay.
- [Gretchen] Okay.
